This post is more of a reminder list for me than entertainment for you....
Things I need and/or want for the new condo
1. A vacuum that doesn't blow dust at your face when you try to use the attachment piece. One that works on laminate flooring would be ideal. I have a feeling you need to spend a pretty penny to get a "good" one though. Sigh. Christmas present? Oh wait, my parents are probably getting me a dining room table for that holiday. Can I live without a vacuum until my April birthday?
2. A set of drawers for my bathroom crap. I never knew how much I depended on a medicine cabinet. Like where do I put my toothbrush, toothpaste, nail clippers, Neosporin, spare hair ties and Advil? This necessity is a bit less expensive than the first so perhaps I can pick that up at Walmart this week when I go to get toilet paper and garbage bags (and aluminum foil for my Michael Jackson Memorial Party costume).
3. A coffee table. The one I have is too low. I'd love an huge padded ottoman! Put that on the Santa list. Or perhaps it can be on the tax refund list. I can bump the flat screen tv down one. I'd appreciate a place to put my feet more than a tv, right?
4. CURTAINS! Staring out into the darkness of the forest in my "backyard" from the patio doors is getting kind of scary. Are there soundproof curtains? I'd like them to block out the noise of my neighbor who is always yelling at his poor dog. Dude, put him on a leash if you don't want him to go places. Maybe that would save you from yelling "Get over here" or "Don't go there" or "Get out" or "No" (plus or minus a cuss word or two). Just a thought....
5. A new computer of the Mac variety. Yes, I get a laptop during the school year. Yes, I have my mini laptop and a desktop computer already at home. I think it'd be nice to have a desktop at home that is quick and has the same formats as my school computer. That way I can create lots and lots of worksheets for the kiddies while at home and don't have to worry about dropping the school's laptop. There's an educator's discount and a free ipod rebate thing every year. I'll start saving for next August!
6. A new used car. I hope the Taurus makes it to 2011 but I have a sneaky suspicion it may not. If the secret to keeping a car a long time is all in the oil changes then I need to hire someone to take my car for one every three months. Any takers? Free joy ride in my car if apply for the job.
7. A king size bed. I got the room at my aunt's lake house with the king-er this weekend (because I refused to sleep with the two snorers...but learned sweeper can snore too. Sigh.) It's so amazing that you can share a bed with someone and not even realize they are there. The extra long pillows are a must too....makes the other person seem even farther away.
Reality Thought of the Day: Why would you continue to date someone that you'd considered signing up for Vh1's Tool Academy???? People are stupid.

Skipper Meg
I went boating yesterday. It was a day of many firsts. First trip to Blarney Island. First trip to the Sand Bar. First pee in a lake.
The Chain of Lakes is almost over the Wisconsin border. It took us almost two hours to get there but I assume it should only be a one hour ride. Ohhh, construction and a late boat Captain. So we got to the drop-off point at noon and I met Kyle's friends--love being on a boat with 3 people I don't know for 9 hours! We tooled around the many lakes and I watched the rest do some water skiing. There were too many other boats out for me to want to have that "first".
We made it to Blarney Island by 2. Now, this is basically a bar in the middle of the lakes. You just pull up your boat and some cute little 12 year old Dock Boys attach it and you go off to drink. It calls itself the "Key West of the Midwest". I hope Key West is more exciting. Blarney Island is a crap-hole that serves alcohol (only Bud products on beer though. BOOoooooo!). During our stay in "Key West" we watched a Tom Petty cover band perform. They were pretty good and so were my cheese fries. My jager shot was delightful and my margarita was so-so. The people-watching was AMAZING. Since the island shuttles people in from the mainland, we spied some HOT bikers. I particularly liked the man with a pregger stomach who was sporting a leather vest that laced up the sides and no shirt. He was making me hot...or maybe that was the jager? Or the 90 degree temperature? Kyle's friend summed it up best "great place when you're drunk not so much when you're sober."
We cruised out of Blarney Island (without buying tiny tanks that said "Take me to Blarney Island") around 4 and headed to the Sand Bar. I'm going to write it as two capitalized words. Basically, it's just this spot in the Chain of Lakes that is really shallow. People line up their boats and anchor them and wade to the shallow part which on me is about waist high. All they do here is DRINK thus the capitalization of Bar. It was a bunch of drunk bikini-clad women dancing on boats or in the water. I spotted a stripper pole on one boat! It was definitely the place to be and somewhere to check out. However, the more time we spent there the more cans of beer I drank and the more I had to pee since I broke the seal at Blarney, which leads to my next first.
Yup, I peed in a lake. We left the Sand Bar and went to a connecting lake to water ski again and I really had to go so they stopped the boat and Kyle, the other girl on the boat and I got into the water to go. They both went. I wasn't feeling it and got back in the boat unrelieved. Other passenger who I dislike was like "What? Stage fright?" Excuse me, Mr. Lawyer, but women don't go pee anywhere and everywhere (especially not when wearing clothes). I usually require a toilet, jerkface. P.S. I didn't see you in the water going. Anywho, after the next no wake zone, I was about to burst so I requested another stop. Ahhh, nothing like desperately hanging off the ladder of the boat (because I can't swim) to pee. Then, since once you break the seal, it's like no stopping, I made another rest stop twenty minutes later when the boat was stopped for Kyle to ski. So that means I peed in the lake TWICE. Hooollllaaaaa. It was a proud moment. And, much more challenging than I imagined. I guess some of us just have a hard time peeing our pants.

Ohhh children
I went to school today to get some copying done before I had to fight other teachers for time with my favorite duplo. At 1:00, registration for incoming 7th graders started. I smiled politely at one tour group (I heard they were on my team) as I was heading home. Didn't want them to think I was a meanie! I hate fake smiling (and nodding) by the way.
After that tour group passed, three of last year's students came running down the hall toward me....shouting my name. (That made said tour group turn around and take in my greatness yet again).
Girl: Miss Birger, are you married yet???
Me: Uhh, no, was I supposed to be?
Girl: Yeah, remember this summer you were supposed to find a boyfriend and get married.
Me: Oh, right. Well, I did spend my whole summer looking for a boyfriend but it didn't produce results...
Two things
1. I only have 6 days to find a hubby and complete my summer homework assignment.
B. I hope the tour group (still in earshot) gets sarcasm....

Brats and Tots Day
I met (as in waved to) my neighbor with the rifle today while I was cooking brats for dinner. He seems friendly and un-scary. At least now that we're friends I know he won't be using the rifle on meeeee. He's got a prissy little dog though... makes me feel even worse that he's always yelling at it. I was fine when he was yelling at a mutt but now that it's a happy-go-lucky white fluffy prancing thing, I don't know...
In other news, Brett accused me of living him a voicemail of a male tinkling. That made my night.
What also made my night was Nate and Katie's attempts to be let in. They decided to (romantically) throw stones at my windows. It's unfortunate they had been ringing the wrong door bell and thus threw the stones at the wrong windows. Luckily, Jeff thought they were ghosts and I went to investigate/let them in.
Another night-maker....Jeff's pounding frantically on my screen door (after I had let him out to go home) because he was afraid to cross the toad at the end of my sidewalk. Yes, I said toad. He ended up walking around the 4 car garage just so he wouldn't have to walk over the creature. Perhaps the dramatization of a little girl being bitten by a deadly mojave snake on Animal Planet's "I Was Bitten" implanted this (logical?) fear in him.
I should pack while I am waiting for Becky to call. One would think with all my days off that I'd use the time to pack. Nope. I'm leaving tomorrow for the MP (and its delightful parental airport taxi company) by noonish and haven't packed a darn thing.

Indiana Residency....who needs it?
I have been stripped of my Illinois driver's license. The BMV (Bureau? What's wrong with Department?) was merciless. Wanda didn't even let me say goodbye. And, Carolynn took the worst picture I have ever seen of myself. It's bad enough that they don't let you smile anymore but then she tried to tell me my head was tilted. I was just standing there....uhh...perhaps your camera was tilted, woman. And, thanks for telling me you were hitting the "take picture" button. Long story short, I hope they still let lazy eye-d people into bars.
In other news, my floors are about half-done I'd say. I no longer see concrete but rather bright pool water blue padding and wood underlayment? My floorspeak is terrible. It was a rather dull day though. I sat in my room with no cable or internet (they had to unplug both to get said pool blue stuff and wood down). I did get half a pre-test made for this coming year. I need to stop by school tomorrow to pick up some worksheets and papers I forgot to pack or misplaced during the move. It's not really "on the way" anywhere but the 90 minute round trip ride will be a way to get me out of the house. You can only sit around in your room waiting for the floors to be done for so long.
My day out will actually start with a hair-trim at 10. The word cut suggests a more drastic change than I ever go for. My hair will look the same. Just a 1/2 inch shorter. I hope the kids at school like it.
Speaking of school again. It starts August 13. Holy cow. After I get back from Maine, I'll have to start practicing waking up before 9....4 hours before 9. Eeek.

Ohhh, Becky
I just received this text from our favorite Montana-ite:
I am now the proud owner of a pink cowboy hat. And I'm rocking the shit out of it.
I laughed. Out. Loud
In other news, I'm going to see my two favorite baseball teams play each other tomorrow.
Cubs vs Cardinals.
Fortunately, I had enough craft time today to connect my Cubs shirt with my Cardinals one. The Cardinal red and Cubbie blue look beautiful stitched together with a white shoestring. However, now it looks like my shirt just says "PU"(jols) on the back....
I figure the game should give me time to catch up with my long lost friend Britta and get a nice base layer of sunburn for my 87 degree tour of Kentucky on Tuesday. I feel I will learn something (that I already knew?) on that adventure---I cannot live farther south than Valparaiso. Too hot.

Michael Jackson
I'm very glad I don't have to work today for right now I am witnessing HIStory. Michael's body is currently en route to the Staples Center for the Memorial. They have closed highways in LA for him and the news cameras are following the hearse as if it was OJ's bronco.
I have been watching msnbc but their commentators are annoying me. Especially this one chick. I'm taping vh1's coverage (because they only have 2.5 hours of it as opposed to msnbc's 6 hours) for Katie. They just interviewed John Norris, old time MTV news guy. He is not aging well. Or perhaps he just needs a more grown-up hair cut. I don't think 50 year olds should be sporting skater mops.
He's arrived at the Staples Center. Must go.
Update (12:36)-The service has started. Yes, Britta, the goosebumps come and go.
Update (1:45) - I had no idea Michael and Brooke Shields were such good friends. She is the first one to visibly tear up/cry.
I do like that all of the brothers are wearing one sparkly glove. And props to Jermaine for getting up to sing.
Update (2:28) - The We Are the World sing-a-long got me. Goosebumps. Teary eyes. I'm a schmuck. I wasn't expecting to react like that because they started out with some no names singing it but then when the brothers with their sparkly gloves went up there with Lionel and Michael's kids (who don't really know the words to the song)...
Ooooh, hot damn. I think I just spotted Tyrese on stage.

Happy 3rd of July!
They’re Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
Last Wednesday, I found one (dead) silverfish as I was placing my vast array of books (Highlights of the collection: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Hung: The Measure of Black Men in America and The First Days of School (advice for first time teachers)) on a bookshelf. I called my emergency bug contact (Jennie because Katie was on an airplane) and made her assure me that the bug was just stuck to the bottom of the bookshelf in the move. Surely, the demonic silverfish cannot live through two moves (one to the storage shed and then one here). She pointed out that the 100 + degree temps we had last week probably killed them off too. I slept fine that night--with the light OFF.
Today, I get here and have spotted three itty bitty teenie weenie silverfish. They were on the windowsills (two in my bedroom and one in the dining room). I sprayed them with my spider killer. So they traveled with me? I think that seems impossible. I didn’t bring any of my stuff directly here from the old apt. Everything had a layover in the 115 degree storage garage. Luckily, Walmart has everything I need…including a kitchen bug killing spray that mentions silverfish on the bottle under what it kills. Hooray! It’s a shame I have to wait til morning to spray…wouldn’t want to suffocate of fumes (?) during the night.
Did someone say Walmart? Here is a downside to living in Illinois: the Walmarts close. Like they are only open until 10. What is that all about? Thank you, Valpo, for being a college town and understanding the needs of your people whether it be at noon or 10:06 pm.
While on that topic, let’s talk about how cashiers at Walmart don’t know what to do when you bring in your recyclable save the planet blue walmart sack. They have absolutely no idea what to do with your purchases. I was so environmentally happy the first time I remembered to bring my bag yet I walked out of the place ticked off. I had enough stuff to make the bag pretty full but it definitely should have all fit in my sack. I walked out of the place with my blue bag and THREE plastic bags. Now, something’s off here.
Today (second trip remembering the bag), the cashier asked me what I wanted in the bag. What do you mean what do I want? MY GROCERIES (minus the carton of eggs), dumb-butt. Sigh. Perhaps it’s me? I am over-reacting. Surely, they do not get trained on how to pack a grocery bag. If I have so much of a problem with them, I should just go to self check-out.
Those self check-out stations yell at you though. Error in the bagging area! Insert cash or select payment type! It gets me flustered. I hate drawing attention to myself…or rather I hate loud machines drawing attention to me.
I wrote this on Tuesday night but since my new residence is internet and cable-less for the time being, it gets posted on Friday.

I should have majored in inventions
I've always liked sharing my dreams (like sleep time dreams not dreams like hopes and aspirations...I don't have any of those) with others, especially the really far out ones. Last week, I decided that I want to be able to "dvr" said dreams.
How cool would it be if I could just hit play and you could see my dream instead of listening to my terrible description? Let's face it, telling people about dreams is useless. They can't follow most of the randomness. I don't follow your dreams when you tell them to me unless it's something basic like "I was pregnant." I can picture that.
The dvr-ing dreams bug has spread into me wanting to be able to dvr parts of my life.
Sexbomb walks into the Guild lounge Twister tournament in a bath robe. *RECORD*
Your personal dorm room printer starts printing (the Feast from the East menu) out of nowhere. *RECORD*
Britta's random "friend" stares you down at the Cubby Bear and starts singing. *RECORD* Now, you can have his rendition of Take Me Home Tonight to watch and laugh at FOREVER.
The dvr concept will come in handy for nonsober moments, too. Like "I just finished my third jager shot...better hit record!" (If you've seen The Hangover, how much did you love that they brought jager to the rooftop? And it had ruffies in it? Bahaha. Stellar Father's Day movie choice.)
So I am not that big a fan of technology in some instances (i.e. the teaching world and how the jerk at work says in 10 years they won't need teachers because everything will be computer-based) but this personal brain dvr thing would be AMAZING. Start inventing, people.

I'm not moving to Stockholm
Well, I've realized a few things upon being back in Illinois the past two weeks.
One thing is that I lack activities to do during the day. My entertainment schedule recently has included going home and hanging out with mom and dad, which is fine and dandy but we don't do anything. Ok, that's a lie. Dad and I watch Jeopardy at 3:30 and the Wheel at 6:30 (after a prompt 5:00 dinner). We also all sit in the living room on our individual lap tops and surf the internet. Seeing as this is what I do when I'm alone at Katie's, I've practically run out of things to google. Please give me a topic to research or a homework assignment to do or a craft/skill to learn.
I have concluded that I lack activities to do because I don't have activity partners. Parents don't count. Katie (and everyone else here) works a lot. They don't have set schedules and work both days AND nights. Sheeesh. And, yes, I am independent enough to go and do things on my own. However, I canNOT go frisbee golfing alone because I'm not good enough. It's one thing to see a pro (a la Brett) play on his own because he's talented (and has his own disc bag). It's another thing to watch a total amateur go there and putz around.
This next epiphany might meet criticism. I do not like riding in the car for more than 10 minutes without hearing a country song. I cannot do it. Riding with the family is torture--all this non-country stuff! I did get away with listening to some country on the way back from Valpo on Tuesday but only because we needed the traffic updates. Perhaps it's just a driving thing since that's what I listen to on my 40 minute drive to and from work. Maybe I can still tolerate non-country classics...but just not in the car (I type this as I have the "today's country" music channel from comcast on the tv.)
I own a house. That statement is more fact than epiphany but it's worth stating. I don't think the feeling has really set in yet...probably because I'm not entirely moved in yet. I hope to be completely moved in by July 13 (because that's when I have to give up my storage garage.) I just need the floors in the living room done. I hope to have my realtor's son on that as soon as he gets back from vacation....
ATTN: Future Visitors--when you stay at Motel Birger, you'll have your own room. Same couch but a door that closes to block out that snoring noise I sometimes hear from select visitors. : )
Well, that's all I have. I apologize for not getting chased by the cops because I was swinging after hours or participating in a competition of the hurling or kickball variety.
P.S. As for movies, Dave, let me suggest 17 Again (when it's at your cheap theater) and Away We Go (with Jim from The Office). I enjoyed the latter more than I thought I would, however, my movie going buddy (a male) said it was a movie he'd only be seeing once. I think that chick flick bone in your body may like it, Dave. And if your partner in crime won't see it because two dudes seeing a chick flick is not cool, see it when Kristin comes to town!

Every party needs a theme
Jeff showed off his jump rope skills at the party last night.
I love his face at the end.

Don't you just love kids?
A kid asked me if I was on e-harmony.
Now he's a kid I don't like very much so I threw a calculator at him.
Ha.
No, I didn't. However, the other students wanted to. They were more offended than I was, which was comforting. I just told the inquiring gentleman that one day he will ask the wrong person (someone not as cool, calm and collected as myself) and get popped in the face. I said all this with a nice smile on my face. : ) Then, I called him e-harmony boy for the rest of class.
Sidenote: I went home and saw about ten tv commercials for "Free Communication Weekend" on e-harmony.com. Is the world trying to tell me something?
Speaking of my students, you should have heard the cheers I got after the wheelchair basketball game. I sucked it up, don't you worry, but when I got my certificate of participation at the end, the students went wild. I was impressed with myself. My internal applause meter says that I was second only to the referee...who the kids think is hot. Not a bad showing on my part.
The kids also said that my face was funny when I was shooting (missing) a basket. I guess I even swung my arm and went "oh, darn" after one missed shot. Hahahaha. Go me. I will be getting a copy of the video as soon as I can so if you're in the area, stop on by for a viewing!

Happy Pi Day to you!
Well, it's Pi Day and to celebrate, I bring you a list of happenings(numbered by the digits of pi that I know off the top of my head).
3. If you know what school I work at, you could go to my teacher website and look through a slide show of images from my class's Pi Day Celebration. I gave each kid a digit of pi and a paper plate. They could decorate the plate any way they wanted. At the end of class, I took pictures of them and their plates and will paste all the pictures(i.e. the first 108 digits of pi) in order on my classroom wall. Next year, I'll start at the 109th digit and continue the picture collage. I'm excited about the idea!
1. I'm currently giving Notting Hill another try. I don't know if it'll hold my interest for the whole 3 hours ABC Family is playing it for though...Oh, I just remembered an episode of Little People, Big World that I haven't seen is on at 6:30. Well, Notting Hill, you had your chance.
4. I did laundry today because I had NOTHING to wear. Seriously. I did four loads!
1. I ate at Portillo's last night with Danielle and her brother and sister. Her brother loves Portillo's hot dogs (who doesn't?) but he did not have one...Catholics and their meat-free Fridays. I almost felt guilty indulging in front of them. We then saw Slumdog Millionaire at the cheap M-ville theater. Oh, how ghetto it is. They do give out a free bag of popcorn with every movie ticket though. That's a good deal especially since they don't make you buy anything else with the popcorn. I love the seats there too--none of the pizazz of the newer stadium seats (which I find uncomfortable because I'm short and my feet don't always get to be firmly planted on the floor). The M-ville seats tilt back at a nice angle. I don't know if it's on purpose or from lots of wear. Regardless, I like them.
5. The movie was good. I thought it seemed longer than 2 hours but that's not to say I didn't like it. By the way, I'm writing a new song entitled "I'm in Love with a Slumdog." I hope Weird Al didn't get to the idea first.
9. Shamrock Shakes are back!!!!! I had forgotten all about them. I plan to pick up some of that minty goodness on my way to tv time at Natie's tomorrow. Britta, who did we convince that shamrock shakes were made of shamrocks? Was it you, Brett?
2. I shaved my legs today. Hello, Spring.
6. While I was shaving, I noticed my legs were blue! I think I should have been more frightened seeing blue water going down the drain. I just kept right on shaving and it took me the rest of the shower to figure out that my new jeans must have left a blue coating on my poor pale legs.
5. I put said blue-leg making jeans in one of the four loads of laundry today.
3. My tv stand's broken piece won't be replaced for another 5 weeks. I'm getting kind of sick of seeing this partially put together stand in my living room. However, I don't have another place to put it nor do I want to un-put-together the darn thing so it'll fit back in the box.
5. My job is secure for next year. I heard it from the Assistant Superintendent's mouth. I guess when you ask your principal for a letter of recommendation, word gets around that you are scared to lose your job and the big man seeks you out to tell you what's going on.
8. I'm excited that VU's spring break ends tomorrow. That means Dave will be back for Activity Days while I'm on break. It also means that Jennie returns form Florida and I have a playmate again.
9. I want to see the new Zac Efron movie, 17 Again. I just saw a commercial for it today. Damn, he's fine.
7. I slept in my bed last night (with the light on) and didn't get eaten alive by silverfish. If you hadn't heard, I found another one last week by the headboard of my bed. Yuck.
9. I wake up at 8:23ish EVERY Saturday. It's pretty ridiculous. I rolled over at about 6 this morning and thought I wouldn't fall back asleep but I did. And, when I next opened my eyes, it was 8:24. Strange.
Yup, I know 14 digits of pi (after the decimal point, that is). Jeal?

Happy 100th Post to Me!
For this 100th post, I have a special treat for you...a gift from two of my students to me.

The Back Story: One girl told me I should marry Kevin Jonas because he was only two years younger than me. I politely declined by calling him the ugly Jonas. Word got out that I said this about one of the sacred Jo Bros and they thought it'd be funny to make me this. I do feel honored because all the pictures had to come from a Jonas Brother magazine. So basically they ruined their prized possessions for me. I'm loved. And Kevin is still the least attractive Jonas.
Now, can I hang this poster up at school? Or, would that be a bit creepo-ish?

Happy Square Root Day!
And, Pi Day is coming!!!!
What an exciting two week span for a Math teacher!
I was researching activities I could do with my kids for Pi Day and I found this video. I downloaded the song and plan to play it for my kids while wearing an over-sized hoodie and stocking cap(a la Eminem in 8 Mile).
It'll pump them up for our Pi memorization challenge. One point of extra credit for every 6 digits. How many can you memorize

Reporting from my couch/bed
Yup, I'm sleeping on my couch again. I think you'd do the same if you'd killed 3 centipede creatures in your room(one of which was on your PILLOW). I did kill one in the living room on Friday night but given the data, I think the home station is upstairs somewhere. EW.
I bought a new can of spider killing spray at Walmart today and proceeded to spray every baseboard in my apt. Don't worry, I cracked the windows so I wouldn't pass out. If it gets to be Tuesday and I haven't killed any more creatures, I'll head back upstairs. My couch is pretty comfy though...especially since I put my freshly cleaned sheets on it. Add my freshman year comforter to them and I am in heaven. I do sleep with the light on ...to tell the centipedes I am here. I think they travel/fiesta in the dark when un-supervised.
On a more positive note, they were able to recover all my files(except for music) from my crashed computer! They then transferred them to my NEW MacBook. Hoollllaaaa. It has a camera in it. You know what that means??? I can videochat with YOU. Or do a video blog easily I suppose. The first is more exciting. Last night Becky and I played charades. Quite entertaining for a plan-less Saturday evening. We're going to work on getting games like Guess Who and Battle Ship so we can play each other. So amazing! Let us know if you want in.
I still haven't heard about my townhouse that I was supposed to hear about on February 12. I found some nice houses online today BUT I can't live in a house. I was exhausted when I had to shovel out the bottom of my driveway for 15 minutes the other week. I just could not handle yard work at this stage in my life. I just have far more important things to do with my time...like blog or eat?
Speaking of eating...my parents brought me tons of grocery goodies yesterday! I think they might be trying to send me a message though. I got 100 calorie packs of doritos, sun chips and cheetos for my lunch, jell-o, apple sauce, cranberry juice, fruit snacks that contain my daily intake of vitamin C(and that will last me like 50 lunches) and cheese sticks. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? My parents are trying to slim me down, aren't they?
One last thought before couch. Why is Dr Pepper(or any pop for that matter) so expensive? Like 6 bucks for 24 cans is NOT a good deal. Well, Meghan, why didn't you just buy 12 then? Because 12 cans for $4 is still NOT a good deal. Sigh. After entertaining the idea(for .8 seconds) of buying Dr Thunder, I splurged. The case should last me at least a month unless the kids are nuts at school.

Oh Boy
I'm planning/saving for a vacay in April of Twenty-Ten. My birthday is on Good Friday so that means I get a four day weekend(as long as I'm employed in a school) to celebrate my 25th year on this lovely Earth.
Where should I go? Do you want to come with? Would I like a cruise? Should I just stick with an all-inclusive deal? Should I ride down into the grand canyon on a mule? Suggestions are welcome.
Also, watch this clip from TAR. I was crying when we watched. And, I would have peed my pants had I been one of those beer drinking foreigners at the bottom of the hill.

I'm a nerd
So I learned this cool teaching strategy at the conference today(and you thought I spent the WHOLE time daydreaming).
It's a strategy called RAFT to promote writing in different content areas(like Math) and I really liked it. You give your kids a Role, Audience, Format and Topic to write about. For instance....
Role: Triangle
Audience: Circle
Format: Love Letter
Topic: Secret Admirer
Here's my sample for the class. Try not to be too jealous of my skillz.
Dear Circle,
I admire you in 360 ways. Listing all of those ways would take longer than calculating the digits of pi. For that reason, I will limit myself to the quotient of your diameter divided by your radius. Your curved outside is like no other polygon’s I know. And, I cannot escape your ever-present symmetrical figure. Every time I see a clock. a CD or a doughnut, I think of you.
Loving you with all of my 180 degrees,
Your three-sided secret admirer

I thought of more while I was at this conference today. Yes, I was daydreaming. The kids do it when I teach so I'm allowed to do it when I'm "learning" too.
18. I am overly cautious about who I am sending text messages to. I triple or quadruple check the To: line. After two instances of wrongly sent messages(both intended for Britta and talking about the two different people who actually received them), you would be too. For the record, I did intercept the most life-ruining/embarrassing one before it was read. PHEW.
19. I have been the same height since 1999. The only thing that has changed is that back then, I was "somewhat tall". Sigh.
20. I just don't get how girls can be attracted to blond-haired men. The ONLY blond I've thought "oooh-la-la!" about is Zack Morris.
21. After discussing my beer capacity both now and previously at the bar on Saturday, I have officially concluded that I was an alcoholic during the spring of 2007. Britta can attest to this fact. I'm going to blame it on student teaching those little rowdy bastards in M-ville and free, unlimited access to beer.
22. I have to be tipsy to feel like dancing in public.
23. I think a frozen pizza tastes better when it's room temperature as opposed to fresh out of the oven. Usually, I eat just one more piece(because I'm not good at saying no to tempting food!) before putting the leftovers in a baggie in the fridge for the night. MMMM mmmmmm.

25 Random Things
Everyone on the good ole book of the face is telling 25 of their "friends" random facts about them. Well, let's be honest, I don't have 25 friends on FB that would care to know 25 things about me. I know there are people I don't speak to that would read my facts(just as I have read theirs) but I'm not going be entertainment for those stalkers...
So, I'm tagging you(you will not receive an email alerting you of the fact though...this is less exciting than facebook already),readers. (Dave, this is like a myspace survey so I'm sure you'll be all over it.)
1. My oldest sister got married when she was 35, which means I have a good 11 years to settle down. That would still give me a 40 year marriage...seems long enough to me. And, yes, this is something I think about because 13-year-olds like to know my business.
2. I learned an important lesson in high school: You don't have to hang out with people you don't like. So, if I willingly hang out with you, I like you. If not, draw your own conclusion.
3. My job may be on the line because of financial issues in our public school system. I never thought this would happen. Junior Highs, which require 3 teachers per subject are cheaper than middle schools, which require 4. The lowest person on the totem pole(ME) gets cut. Yippee.
4. On the topic of #3, if I do need a new job, I think I am pretty f***-ing marketable. I can teach you English or Math, run your Nerd Bowl team, host after school tutoring, keep score for volleyball OR basketball games, etc.
5. Whenever I find Friends to watch on TBS, I LOL at least three times per episode. Why didn't I watch this show when it was on?
6. Since living alone, I don't think I could share my abode with anyone for an extended period of time.
7. Living alone has made me feel a bit anti-social. Like, is it ok that sometimes I'd rather sit here on my couch than call anyone to hang out?
8. I don't call people to hang out because I don't know if they want to hear from me/hang out with me and because of number 9...
9. I don't like calling people...to order pizza, to call customer service,to make hair or dentist appointments...
10. I also have "bad phone call ending" disease. I get it from my mother. She all but hangs up on me some days. "Ok, I'll let you go. Bye. Bye. Click"
10. I've been trying to ask more questions in conversations lately. I've been thinking I dominate conversations with facts/stories about me.
11. High schoolers intimidate me. Maybe it's their height or the possibility that they could be smarter than me. Maybe it's because I disliked high school.
12. I LOVED middle school. That fact probably explains a lot.
13. I was a bitch in middle school(but that's not why I loved it). I do feel bad about it but since I only talk to one person from back then, it's all good?
14. I can only chew gum for 40 minutes. After that, my gag reflex starts to kick in and I have to spit the gum out ASAP.
15. I don't pay my own car insurance or phone bill. Call me spoiled but I don't think I could handle that financially right now.
16. I have "feelings" about things that will happen in my life but don't always follow said feeling. For instance, I KNEW that I'd go to Valpo by September of my senior year of high school but still claimed Purdue has my number one choice until May 1. I also KNEW that I'd be a teacher but didn't declare a major until the end of my sophomore year of college. Another back burner feeling--I will have three sons and I will name them Joshua Thomas, Matthew Paul,(I had this name before I met THE Matthew Paul of Morgan TWP) and Ryan(I don't remember the middle name). And, no, I'm not a psycho. I'll let my husband(Anoop from AI) suggest some names as long as they all have my LAST name.
17. There was a kid with the last name of Fry in my preschool class. The teacher and all the kids thought our friendship was hilarious.
25. Oh, 25 already??? Phew.

Faves from last night
Are Doritos making a comeback? There sure were a lot of commercials for them(and for Budweiser....yuck!)
This was actually Jeff's favorite. So just imagine him laughing at the koala. "It's funny *insert Jeffy laugh* because he's wearing glasses *insert another Jeffy snicker* and holding a coffee cup."
"No one wants to see you naked." Bahahahaha.

New in Town
Reasons I liked the new Renee Zellweger movie:
1. I haven't seen a romantic comedy at the theater in FOREVER. What was the last one? Sex and the City? Was that in May? I was overdue for one, that's for sure.
B. It is set in podunk Minnesota, which means amazing character with fantastic accents/ways of speaking, dontcha know? Blanche, the tapioca expert, was my fave!
3. Some of it reminded Katie and me of Indiana...
D. A very scruffy Harry Connick Jr.....
How good does he look playing a small town man? Mmmmm MMMMMM.
Sidenote: He played a fireman, which extends the stereotype that all firemen(even the ones in small towns) are hotties. I'm not saying that attractive firemen don't exist. I just don't want you all to start your house on fire expecting a tall, dark, and handsome perfectly chiseled male to rescue you. Chances are that a 55 year old mustached dad with thinning hair will show up. And, as much as I love Harry's beard here(and how it brings out his flannel shirt), I will inform you that firemen may not have full beards while employed. It messes up the fit of their face masks. Sorry, writers of this movie. Perhaps that is why you had him shave it off for the end of the movie? (P.S. A beardless Harry is not the man for me)
On an unrelated note, did I sleep exercise last night? My whole body is sore. My hands hurt when I extend my fingers. My arm pain made it hard to put on my coat after the movie was over(and reach/lift the remote now). Stairs are a bitch. This lower back pain makes me swear I'm preggers. Add to those this upper back/shoulder soreness and I can only conclude that I was doing some marathon training during the hours of 10:30 pm and 8:11 am.
Yikes.
Steve Martin hosts SNL tonight. That sounds promising....

Idol on Fox
If you haven't heard, David Cook is going to be performing at Sibs and Kids weekend at VU. Get your tickets now!
Yeah, I'm going to keep my $18 too.
I do have Idol to thank for me getting in a better mood last night. I was in a couch coma(bundled in a blanket, staring blankly at the tv) from 6(when I finished my BK comfort food) to 7:57 when Idol played this recap. George who appears around 1:15 of the video is the reason I "snapped out of it" and graded papers last night.
As I told Britta in a voice mail, he is a combination of all the awkward people I know. I wonder if you see a little bit of yourself in him....

Hypothetically...
If you were going to apply for a different teaching job, how would you answer the following questions.
List three problems in education today. Expand on one of them.
What do you feel is the teacher's role in the community?
In your own handwriting(eeek!), what is your view of the teacher's role in matters of discipline?
Thoughts on those are appreciated as are ways in which you'd ask your current principal for a letter of recommendation if you're thinking about switching jobs before you lose yours..
In other news, I was going to reheat one of my mom's casseroles for dinner today but decided comfort food was necessary so I got myself a whopper with cheese(catsup only as the drive thru screen said), fries and a DP. Heaven.
Idol's on THREE times this week!
And, David Cook is coming to VU. OMG. I don't think I can handle it. GAG!

Next week isn't a full work week either!
I'm waiting for my laundry to finish drying before I pass out. Laundry was a task I started at around 5:30. I got interrupted by spontaneous social plans. Jennie texted me...
Jennie: I almost called you tonight to hang but alas my bumness settled in : /.
Me: Tis ok. I can't go out. I'm doing laundry and all my bras are in the washing machine.....
Jennie: Woot woot! Come on over! We don't have them on.
So, I slipped into my Walmart crocs and went as I was.
NOT.
I HAD to throw on a sports bra(the only bra that was not being washed) because I knew how upset my mother would be if I got in an accident and was found wearing pj pants and no bra.
I also picked up some blizzards on the way. Best idea ever. If you're wondering, Ed and I have the same taste in blizzard-butterfinger. It's love. Jennie and Mama W are a bit picky. I had to order a mint m&m blizzard with a squirt of chocolate and a butterfinger one with Spanish peanuts. Those last two orders def held up the drive-thru lane but everything was right! (I normally would have gone in for such a special request but I didn't want to scare anyone with my red candy cane fleece pants.)
We ate our heavenly blizzards, watched Friday Night Lights, which uses very strange/dark camera angles, and two episodes of Dawson's Creek. An evening well spent, I'd say.
Tomorrow, I have many things on my To-Do List especially since I'm trying to reserve my Sundays for portfolio writing/finishing and watching America's Next Top Model.
And, because Britta requested more lists.
1. Academic Super Bowl starts Wednesday. Yay for kids who want to spend an extra hour a week doing Math!!!! I'll be among my own nerd people. Holla.
B. I'd really like to hear about my townhouse soon. Do di do.
3. The water meter battery changer dude was NOT attractive today. Mostly because he was 65. What a disappointment!
D. I signed up to take the Jeopardy Contestant Online Test next week. So, please don't bother me Wed at 8. Thanks.

Uhhh
I just found another full-on gray hair.
That makes the tally 2.5. I have two near the back of my part that are like 1/4 gray each which accounts for the .5.
The whole gray hairs are near the front of my part. Of course.

I like lists so you must too
1. The superintendent finally called an "It's effin cold" day on Friday. That was pretty sweet especially since I heard BEFORE I left and before I had even showered. I blame my laziness for this. My alarm went off at 5:21 but I hit the snoozer on it and on my cell phone alarm that went off at 5:25. (Hey, I live alone so if my alarms goes on the fritz, I don't make it to school on time. Better to be safe than sorry!) So at 5:30, the country morning show flowed into my ears from the first alarm and I just laid there thinking that my flannel sheets were far too comfy to get out off just then but that I'd get up when my phone started its "bamb" ringtone. (Does that stand for something? I pretend it means bad butt my name but I doubt that's the case.) Sure enough right at 5:35(Yes, my new phone's snooze goes for 10 minutes, not 5 like my old phone) they were just about to list the school closings. I decided I'd cross my fingers and close my eyes and hope hope hope that my school was on the list and sure enough it was! Instantly, I got a text from another teacher at work saying the same thing so I actually believed the news. What did I do with my day off? NOTHING. And, it was glorious.
2. On Saturday, I planned out our Geometry unit that we need to get to before the ISTEP comes around again in March. Um, testing twice in one year really takes time out of my teaching. I feel rushed and stressed since how people feel about me as a teacher is in these standardized test results. Stupid people judging us even though they aren't in the education field and don't realize some kids just say "f*** you, ISTEP" and don't try. Anyway...I talked to my fellow Math teacher on AIM about school stuff. She's probably about 55 and even she asked me why I was doing school stuff on a Saturday. Sigh. I'm lame, ok? Even old people can see it. Sigh again.
3. Today, I have been very productive in working on this portfolio that will decide whether or not Indiana lets me teach again next year. It's not due until May 1 but I set a personal deadline of Feb 1. I don't think it'll happen but today was a good push in fulfilling that lofty goal.
4. It's dessert Sundae at Katie and Nate's tonight to watch Rock of Love Bus. I just decided since I don't have any dessert in the house that I'm stopping by Taco Bell for Caramel Apple Empanadas. Hollllaaaaa..
5. I'd do Chad Michael Murray.
6. I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow(ahead of schedule). I won't be picking up too much and I mainly just want to go to check out their V-day decorations and goodies.
7. Speaking of Valentine's Day, Britta and I are going away together that weekend. That shouldn't come as a shock to you all who think we're dating. We're going to Iowa, I mean central Illinois, to stuff our faces with food. There is a dessert crepe waiting for me as well as some potato oles at Taco Johns. Yummy! I also bet Britta's dad will make us something delicious (I'm guessing pizza) one evening and that her mom will have made Chocolate Tempters for our return trip. I can't wait! We're also going to have to hang out with that Laura girl...it's like her birthday around that time so she's demanded a funfetti cake. Pssssh.
8. Sing me "I'll be" by Edwin McCain and you'll win my heart. (I'm watching A Cinderella Story on ABC Family thus where this number and number 5 came from)
9. On Tuesday, I'm going to have quite the dilemma. Matt is making dinner so if it's at his house, I'll tape American Idol here and watch it Wednesday since I'm sure my social studies teacher friends would rather watch the inauguration(that word never looks right) coverage that is bound to be on. If we cook here, I might have to demand Idol on Fox because we can't watch Obama while taping Idol. My VCR don't work like that!
10. It's 6:00 and I haven't eaten dinner yet. Maybe I'm not lame?

Random thoughts before Jennie arrives
1. Two of my front teeth on the bottom feel loose. Uhhh? It's a good thing I have a retainer down there to hold them in place...or to fill the gap that will appear when they fall out.
2. It took me like 5 hours to put away all of my Christmas presents/clean up this joint for my guests this weekend. I still haven't even washed the mass of dishes(that accumulated over the past 24 hours how?)
3. Should I make a resolution this year? Last year's was to go to the dentist. I finally accomplished that in October or so. Perhaps I should try to beat that this year. What can I get done BEFORE October? What could take me 9 months or less? A baby?
4. When are they going to call about my townhouse? I know you don't know the answer but I'm getting antsy. I just put away my new blue and yellow towels(Secret Santa gift) and new "M" washcloths to save them for the new place. I'm taking them out of hiding in May if I haven't moved.
5. I have a small scrape on my nose. I remember that I got it on New Year's Eve but don't remember how. All I remember is that I said "ow" and the person next to me (that did it?) said "sorry." I also have many bruises on my legs. I discovered them after I was lotioning my freshly shaven legs this am.
6. Speaking of morning, I woke up at 6 today....after 11 hours of sleep. Yeaaaaahhh, 2009 did not start with a lot of sleep. We're talking about a total of maybe 3 hours on a couch that I shared with Kyle. We slept toe to head and I was on the outside so my legs didn't fit anywhere! I'll choose the floor next time...or demand some spooning action.
7. I found a new game for you to play at your next party. It's called "Who's Got the Best Ass?" This idea was a combined effort from Mike and Annie. Mike was bragging about his fine ass so I think she challenged him. To play, line up your males ass out against a wall. Then, have the females close their eyes and journey on down the line feeling butts using whatever tactic they'd like. Get it down to a Top 2 or 3. Then, parade the females down the line again until you have a winner. After you have a male winner, switch roles to declare a female winner.
Rick and Mike were our final two with Mike winning. I was in the final three of females along with Katie and Betsy. Katie tried to call me on "illegal persuasive booty shaking" but I was not disqualified nor did I win. Sigh. Betsy was proclaimed the winner.
